ANGELS

This distinct group was originally a complex cross of the scented P.crispum (lemon) and Regals. Now, there are angels crossed with angels, species crossed with angels, angels crossed with regals, etc.

Angel type plants were described in the late 1800’s but modern angels evolved from the work of the late Langley Smith of England. His first hybrids were introduced in 1914 but his most popular, and the ones still available in commerce, date from 1935-1940. ‘Catford Belle’ ‘Rose Bengal’ and ‘Mrs. Dumbrill’ are still among the best of the group and have stood the test of time.

Angels branch by themselves, everywhere there is a leaf a branch will eventually emerge, giving the plant an extremely full look. Angels bloom at the tips of each stem so all flowers are exposed. As the plant continues to grow the weight of the stems cause the branches to fall (trail) and because light is in the upwards direction the branches then start to grow towards the light. Here is a photo so you know what I mean PHOTO. I plant my angel hanging baskets with 5 plants per 10" basket, placing them north, south, east, west and one in the middle.

Some angels trail so make good hanging basket specimens (PHOTO) Others are stiffly upright. Some have lemon scented leaves. Not all in this listing are true Angels as they do not have P.Crispum in their background - but as they resemble them closely and have the same growth habits they are grouped here. All flowers are single unless otherwise noted. HB = great for Hanging Baskets.

Instead of letting your angel hanging baskets die from frost, bring them inside and enjoy them indoors. They can be trimmed back when you bring them in or - if you have space - leave them as is and trim them to shape before putting them outside again in the spring. If you are fortunate enough to live in an area where frost and freezing temperatures are not a problem - just trim them to shape whenever they get too long or full.

There is an article under 'Feature Articles' on this website about angels. Here is the link ANGELS.
